Le chrétien africain, « image de Dieu » dans le Christ

Résumé
En effet, la foi chrétienne avec la culture occidentale qui en est le support pour l’évangélisation des peuples africains, ont conduit à un changement très profond et très lourd de conséquences pour l’identité religieuse de l’Africain. La conception traditionnelle du divin est relayée par une forme de pratique religieuse nouvelle : à la place des ancêtres, est venu, dans la résurrection de Jésus, un ancêtre nouveau, auquel l’Africain doit désormais se référer pour son agir. Comment et sous quelle modalité cette référence peut être acceptée comme l’expression d’une sagesse pour l’Africain sans que son identité ne soit pas niée ? Cet accueil n’est passible et paisible que si on considère que dans la tradition africaine déjà, il y a l’affirmation que l’homme est un « hippopotame aveugle » qui ne voit pas loin sans le recours à l’aide des ancêtres qui l’éclairent mais aussi l’apaisent et le rafraîchissent.  A la fois Africain et chrétien, le converti chrétien doit considérer le Christ comme le terme de son accomplissement, l’Evangile comme le message plénier de la sagesse.

Summary
The Christian faith, mediated by the Western culture which served as a support for the evangelization of the African peoples, has indeed led to a very profound change with far-reaching consequences for the religious identity of the African. A new form of religious practice has replaced the traditional concept of the divine. In place of the ancestors, a new ancestor – the risen Christ - has come to whom the African must henceforth refer to for guidance. What are the terms and conditions that make such a reference, as the expression of wisdom, acceptable to the African without his identity being denied? For Africans this is acceptable and unproblematic only if one considers that African tradition affirms that man is a « blind hippopotamus » that cannot see far ahead without the help of the ancestors to light the way and to calm and refresh it. Being African and Christian at the same time, the Christian convert has to regard Christ as his ultimate fulfilment and the Gospel as the full message of wisdom.
